About Akitas
History
The
Akita is recognized as one of the world's oldest breeds of dog,
originating from northern Japan. Today's Akitas descend from the
ancient "Matagi" dogs used to hunt large game in the mountainous region
of Japan's Akita prefecture, and the breed is also is influenced by some
crosses with Asian mastiffs. Despite the breed's
near-extinction after WWII,
U.S. Servicemen
returning from Japan during this time brought Akitas with them,
launching
American interest in the breed . The Akita was fully recognized by the AKC in 1973.
Description
The most
correct description of the Akita is, by definition, the akita standard.
Generally speaking, Akitas are a large
northern-type breed with heavy bone, powerful build, and a thick
double coat. Characteristic features of the breed include a
broad and triangular head, erect ears pitched forward in line with the
neck, and a large curled tail carried over the back.
Breed Standard
Health
Akitas,
like all dogs, are prone to certain genetic disorders. Akitas can
suffer from orthopedic conditions, such as hip dysplasia, patellar
luxation, and cruciate ligament rupture. Also, the
breed is prone to autoimmune disorders, including autoimmune
hypothyroiditis, Sebaceous Adenitis, Lupus, and Pemphigus. Certain
eye disorders also occur in Akitas. Responsible
breeders are aware of these conditions and evaluate all breeding animals
through such organizations as the
Orthopedic Foundation for
Animals and the
Canine Eye
Registration Foundation
TemperamentThe
Akita temperament is described in the breed standard as "alert
and responsive, dignified and courageous." Akitas are
independent-minded and need a strong human leader in the home.
Training is imperative and should begin early and continue
throughout the life of the dog. They are an extremely
loyal breed, and as a natural guard dog, most Akitas
are not excessive barkers unless they intend to impart a
warning. Often described as cat-like, the breed is
extremely clean and quick to housebreak. Akitas are
generally intolerant of other dogs, particularly of the same
sex.
Is the Akita Right For You?The Akita is not the breed for every household, and only you can decide if the
breed is right for you. Please take a look at our site and visit the link section before rushing to acquire any dog.
Akitas are beautiful, loyal, and courageous, but they can be challenging,
especially for first-time owners.
